My New Bedroom!

I spent the past few weeks painting and refreshing my bedroom and the photos are finally ready to share! This was one of those projects that just kind of snowballed. Basically, I did a collaboration with a mattress company that gifted me a king size mattress. But my old bed was a queen, so then I needed a new bed frame. So I reached out to Article - one of my favorite go-to’s for classic yet clean and modern furniture - to outfit my new bedroom with new furnishings. The final reason I needed to complete this refresh? I needed to do one last makeover for my year-long ambassadorship with Clare paint, so I decided to re-paint the room in addition to swapping out all the furniture.
Luckily, Article had just about everything I needed to complete the room (they even have mattresses now!). Originally, I thought I didn’t have the space for a king size mattress in this room, but when I saw Article’s Olalla King Headboard I knew I could just barely fit a larger bed into this relatively small bedroom. Because the headboard has built-in side tables, I wouldn’t have to try and find super tiny nightstands. I’m gonna be honest, I’ve never really been a fan of this modern, modular headboard with built-in nightstands look. They always seem too cold and like they belong at a hotel. For some, “hotel” is a good thing, but for me that phrase always sounds kinda institutional. But this warm, happy headboard/side table combo really sold me on the idea!
The headboard is woven rattan so it adds so much texture the to the room. And I think that’s what keeps it from going in that corporate, boring hotel direction I worry about when I think about built-in nightstands. I paired the headboard with a low platform bed to keep the room feeling as open as possible. Designer tip: having a low bed makes a room feel bigger and more open, literally because it leaves more open space and blocks less of the walls. So if you have a small bedroom like mine (and you can handle getting in and out of a low bed) go for a lower bed.
The room was previously painted a dark, moody color called Field Trip by Clare which I really loved (see before pics below). However, there was a massive moisture issue in the walls that caused some damage and the paint job needed to be redone. And I wanted to go a lot brighter so I went with All The Sage, also by Clare. The color is so soothing and happy in person, much warmer than minty colors I’ve been using lately. I’m definitely in a minty-blue-green era, have been since I moved into Londo Lodge four years ago. And I don’t see it ending soon. I love blues and greens and the combo of the two makes me so happy.
Originally, because I am still totally broke from paying for two full-ass houses in California, I had wanted to keep the original emerald drapes from the room’s previous iteration. But as you can see from the process photo above, the dark drapes really didn’t go with the lighter, beachier vibe of the new room. I was bummed, because I really didn’t have funds to spend on buying new drapes and I had no remaining compensation for this job to count on, so I really wasn’t spending money to make money, I was just spending money to make sure I did the job right and didn’t have ugly photos in my portfolio. I ended up opting for some relatively inexpensive drapes (sourced below), which are much more the vibe I was going for. While I wasn’t happy to spend the money, I’m much happier with the results.
My LA home was built in 1926 and therefore doesn’t have the closet space we’re used to in more modern homes. So I decided to do wall-to-wall dressers opposite the bed. Luckily, Article’s Monterey Dresser was almost the exact proportion to span that space when doubled up. I love that they echo the warm of the bed, same white oak finish but with a different woven pattern that is so pretty. The green and white roman shades are leftover from the last makeover and are a good find from Ikea. They don’t really block light though, so I use them mostly as sheers during the day. What you can’t tell from this photo is that behind those trees are my neighbor’s windows, which look directly into my bedroom. The other windows in the room just look out onto my beautiful backyard (which I’m currently making over, also with Article!) so I have a decent amount of privacy in this room. I leave the neighbor-facing romans drawn most days as that allows light to shine in while also allowing me to change my clothes thirty times a day without feeling like they’re peepin’.
The majority of the furnishings in this room came from Article, a partner I have loved working with time and time again. They had everything I needed for this room, but I had a few very clear visions in my brain that required me to mix it up and get some items elsewhere.
